Where to elope in Byron Bay

Byron's best elopement spots are the ones people do not queue for: Wategos at sunrise, Broken Head for space and rainforest, and the hinterland around Bangalow and Federal when the beaches are full. Wategos, and the hour that changes it

Wategos is the site everyone names and very few people book well. It faces north-east into the sunrise, the headland shelters it from a southerly, and it is a short steep road down from the lighthouse with a car park that fills by mid-morning. At sunrise it is empty, the permit slots are available and the light comes straight down the beach. By eleven it is a busy beach with a wedding on it.

The Pass next door is the same geography with more surfers and easier parking. Main Beach puts the town in the frame, which is either the point or the problem. All three are Byron Shire ceremony sites, booked and paid for through the council, and passed through to you at cost.

Broken Head, and the hinterland when the coast is full

Broken Head is about fifteen minutes south of town down Broken Head Road, with rainforest behind the sand and enough room that a group is not standing in anybody's way. It is the best answer for a small ceremony between October and April, when Byron itself is at capacity, and it is a shire site like the others.

Inland, Bangalow, Federal, Newrybar and Mullumbimby have the capacity the coast does not: properties that manage their own approvals, parking that is a car park rather than a plan, and afternoon light that lasts. In mid-summer the hinterland is the more comfortable ceremony by a wide margin, and it is a shorter drive from the Tweed than Byron town is.
