Currumbin, Tallebudgera and Burleigh, compared

Currumbin is three sites in one: the rock pools up the valley for shade and still water, the creek mouth at the Alley for flat sheltered sand within sight of the car, and the beach for the wide-open version. Tallebudgera Creek is the calmest water on this coast and the easiest walk for anyone unsteady on sand. Burleigh headland is the spectacular one and it belongs to the first hour of daylight — by eight it is a running track.

All three are City of Gold Coast ceremony sites, booked and paid through the council and passed through at cost. Weekday mornings are available, comfortable and better lit than the sunset slots everybody competes for between September and April.

Springbrook and Tamborine, when the coast is too much

The hinterland behind the southern Gold Coast is several degrees cooler in February, quieter at every hour, and closer to the Tweed Valley than the beaches are. Springbrook, Currumbin Valley, Numinbah and Tamborine Mountain all take small ceremonies, and venues like Cedar Creek Estate and Gold Coast Farm House manage their own approvals — no council booking, no site fee, no sunset queue.

Two things to plan for: cloud and road. The escarpment makes its own weather, and a clear morning on the coast can be inside a cloud at Springbrook. The roads up are narrow, winding and slow after rain. Build twenty minutes of margin in and tell your guests to do the same.
