Where on the Gold Coast

Ceremonies on council beaches, reserves and parks need a permit. Fees run $124 to $320 depending on the shire and the site, and are passed through at cost rather than marked up.

Where the ceremony actually happens

Anywhere you like, which is most of the point. A living room, a back deck, a restaurant table before lunch, a park bench, the lawn at a friend's place. Private ground or a venue needs nothing but permission. A designated council ceremony site — a Currumbin or Burleigh beach spot — needs a City of Gold Coast permit like any other ceremony, which is usually more process than a ten-minute ceremony wants.

Ten guests plus your two witnesses is the limit, and it is deliberately more than the Queensland registry allows in total. Most couples bring four or five people, which is the number that fits around a table afterwards without a booking.

Who books this, and why

Couples marrying quietly ahead of a party later, so the legal date and the celebration date do not have to be the same day. Couples marrying a second or third time, who have done the large version and would not do it again. Couples on a visa timeline, or with a parent who is unwell and cannot wait for a season to come around.

None of those is a lesser wedding and none of them is treated as one. The ceremony is short because the law is short, not because the day is small, and the words that have to be said are the same words said at every wedding in Australia.

By about $85 on a weekday, and it costs you the drive to Brisbane, a weekday off work, a fifteen-minute slot booked twelve weeks ahead, and a limit of four people with no guests. On a Saturday the registry is $534 and currently booked out for the year, against $595 here.
Can we have guests at a legals-only ceremony?
Up to ten, plus your two witnesses. That is the main practical difference from the Queensland registry service, which allows four people in total and no guests at all. The ceremony itself is the same ten to fifteen minutes either way.
